Fact is, they really are a couple of local guys who, after being childhood friends, left the area to make their way in the world. Matt traveled extensively, picked up his MBA from Columbia University, and was a rising star in the ranks of the retail hardware industry. Jim built a business in the biotech industry where he focused on sales and customer service to compete successfully against big-boxes in biotech.

Pulled back to their hometown by deep roots, Matt convinced Jim that the retail hardware industry was where it was at. Their goal was to create a unique and totally modern hardware shopping experience that combines service, selection and convenience. In April 2009, Beyond Hardware—one of the country’s first Destination True Value stores—was born, offering big-box store selection in a cozier, brighter, very un-warehousy atmosphere.

Visit Beyond Hardware if you’re in the neighborhood (or heck, even if you’re not—we have customers who drive across town just for us). You can bond with Brooklyn and add your favorite 4-legged friend’s photo to our doggie board in the front of the store. You’ll probably see Matt taking apart a display that Jim just put together.

You’ll also meet many employees who have been with Beyond Hardware since Day One who have helped to build our loyal following. Nancy will be up front, ready to greet you with a smile – she’s our resident happy person, and chances are, you know her—since she seems to know everyone! Be sure to look for Morgan—she knows what’s what in the store and isn’t afraid to give anyone the what-for. Bobby C. is your go-to guy: he’s got the answer to all your home improvement questions. In fact, the local radio guys have tried to stump him repeatedly–and unsuccessfully. He’s also our resident expert in screen and window repair.

Our gardening expert, Pat, doesn’t have a green thumb—we’re convinced that all 10 of her fingers (and toes!) are green! If you hear a lilting Scottish accent, you’ll know Barb is in the paint department, waiting with her great sense of humor to help you with any paint project.

And then there’s Andie. He is knowledgeable beyond his years with expertise in paint, plumbing and a deep knowledge of hardware. Don’t let his youthful appearance fool you—the kid knows his stuff! The rest of the staff is equally helpful and always eager to go above and beyond to serve you.
